Renter FAQs
Do I need my landlord's permission to install smart devices?
Yes — always get written permission unless your lease explicitly allows it. For peel-and-stick or plug-in devices the risk is low, but a written agreement protects your security deposit. See our Getting Landlord Approval guide for scripts and a lease addendum template.
What does "damage-free" really mean?
Damage-free means installation methods (adhesives, command strips, non-penetrating mounts) designed to be removed without leaving marks when used as directed. Follow manufacturer instructions and keep receipts/documentation for removal proof.
What if my landlord still says no?
Try these: offer a trial period, propose a single low-risk device (smart plug), provide manufacturer removal videos, or offer to sign a temporary addendum. See our landlord negotiation script for exact lines and email templates.
Can I install devices myself or should I hire a pro?
Most devices in our guides are renter-friendly and DIY. For complex wiring (hard-wired thermostats) consult a professional. Our guides label difficulty and whether professional help is recommended.
Will installing devices affect my security deposit?
If you receive written permission and remove devices properly, you should be fine. Take before/after photos and keep receipts for adhesive removers or professional removal services.

Do you sell user data?
No. If a third-party requests to buy data, we will notify users and honor applicable laws (see Privacy Policy). California residents can use the Do Not Sell mechanism.
